Teaching Techniques That Can De-escalate a Situation


§ Body language. Try not to smile or point, hands out and open. Don’t approach or touch.
§ Lower you voice (volume and pitch)
§ Lower your body, sit or squat next to the student
§ Do not block student’s path. Angle instead of square on.
§ Give the student you undivided attention. Eye contact, listen to what they say, react, nod etc.
§ Be non-judgmental about what they are saying. Empathize with their feelings, allow silence. Don't be defensive, agree, be respectful.
§ Try to engage them cognitively, “can you help me understand what you need me to do…”
§ If necessary, explain consequences as institutional, not personal “Well I’m not sure, we would have to look at what the school rules say…”
§ Give simple, one step instructions.

§ Offer water, suggest they remove warm clothing, open window.
