Six Facets of Understanding- My example
Description
Activity
Demonstrated Understanding
Facet 1: Explanation
Sophisticated explanations and theories
Students read a description of Mike Parr’s artistic practice and career.
This will cover things such as his techniques, concepts, and achievements.
This will introduce them to Mike Parr’s practice and give them a basic
overview of his life and contributions to art.
Facet 2: Interpretation
Interpretations, narratives, and translations
They will then look closely at three of his drawings and make personal
notes on what they can see within his work. Possible areas worth noting-
emotions, techniques, composition, content, medium, artists aim.
By doing this, students will apply what they have already read to images
of Parr’s work. They will also learn to identify techniques and numerous
aspects of an artwork.
Facet 3: Application
Use knowledge in new situations and contexts
Focusing on one of their observations and use it as the focus to create
their own piece.
e.g.- if they observed his use of sporadic lines, they could create their
own piece based around this.
0r
If they felt that his work portrayed a particular emotion, they could try
to portray this in their own work
This will give students the opportunity to turn their own theoretical
observation into a technique they can use in art practice.
Facet 4: Perspective
Critical and insightful points of view
Students will then discuss each other’s work in pairs and their approach
to Parr’s work. They will see if their approaches were different, and if so,
how they differed.
This shows the subject from other points of view, and shows students
there are numerous approaches to one subject.
Facet 5: Empathy
Ability to get inside another person's feelings
Students will note their partners approach and understanding of Mike
Parr’s work, then say a few words to the class on how their partner portrayed
it through the art work they created
This demonstrates that they have acknowledged other points of view and
can understand the other students approach.
Facet 6: Self-knowledge
To know one's ignorance, prejudice, and
understanding
Write a 2-minute reflection on what you see as the most important aspect
of Mike Parr’s work. Include a question you would like to ask the artist
This encourages the student to individually reflect on their own stance
and think about how they would like to explore the artist in further depth.
