Worksheet: Pop Art Papier Mache

Pop Art Activity: Papier Mache

This is a fun activity that uses clay, papier mache and lots of imagination!

Equipment:
Board
Plastic bags
Clay
Papier mache (Mix-a-paste or cel mix)
Assorted papers: butcher’s paper, brown paper, newspaper
Paint

Ask your teacher for a board that you can put a plastic bag over and then collect some clay to work with. Remember to cover up your clay as you work so it does not dry out, and always remember to wash your tools and hands in a bucket and not too tip any clay water down the sink. (It will clog it up if you do!)

When you have your board and clay start to make a shape out of a common everyday object – maybe a tube of toothpaste, or a bottle of soft drink. Do not try to make it too complicated, because you will paint it afterwards. To make your shape really stand out it is a good idea to scrunch up some newspaper and put it under the clay and then bend the clay over it so it has a curve in it. When your art work is hanging on the wall it will stand out really well then.

After you have finished making your shape put glad wrap all over the top of the clay, and smooth it down. When the clay is covered then you can start to papier mache. A really good idea is to use different colour papers so you know when you have completed one layer. A good idea is to use newspaper, brown paper and then finish with white paper, so it is easier to paint. If you finish with newspaper the printing can show through the paint.

Once you have finished putting your layers on you will need to let it dry for a few days. When it is dry gently lift it up off the clay, take the plastic off the clay and then squash it all up together and put it in a bag so it does not dry out.

Now comes the fun part! Decide what colourful colours you will use to paint your sculpture! Do not use the colours it usually is, you bright primary colours as much as possible.

When it is dry hang it up so everybody can admire your Pop Art masterpiece!
