Worksheet: One last Pop Art Activity!

Pop Art: Cardboard Contour Pop

This activity is a lot of fun and can be made using either thick cardboard or thin cardboard. Unless you have really good scissors it would be best to use thin cardboard with toothpicks or matchsticks in between the layers.

Equipment:
Cardboard (Thick or thin – depending on age group)
Toothpicks/Matchsticks (if using thin cardboard)
Scissors
Paint

For this activity you are to choose a product that you see advertised all the time. It might be your tube of toothpaste, or a skateboard, or even a bottle of your favourite drink.

Find a large piece of cardboard and draw the outline of your product using up as much of the cardboard as you can. Then find another piece of cardboard and draw the outline again only this time make it a bit smaller. Keep doing this with new layers of cardboard until you just have one small shape right on top to finish off your picture. Look at the pictures below to see what I mean.

When you have finished cutting out your cardboard, decided on a really bright colour and paint it, without adding any other colours to the very bottom layer of the cardboard. Be careful not to paint where you want to glue the next layer, because the paint will make it hard to stick. The next step is to add a bit of white to the next layer, and keep doing this for each layer until you reach the very top one which should be very light. Look at the ant and the top of his back. See how light it is.

When the paint and glue are dry hang up your sculpture for everyone to admire!
